Special Mothers Day

Melissa was born on Mothers Day, so when her birthday falls on this holiday, it is a special occasion for the O'Neil clan.

Today was one of those birthdays. Toss in the fact that it is Melissa's first Mothers Day, and we have the makings of a wonderful day.

Melissa's parents and my mom came to Eastern Washington for the occasion, and our dear friends Vanessa and April (wonderful mothers and role models for us these past eight months) took on the task of providing all the food for a memorable lunch. And Auntie Rain and Uncle Alan stopped by. The house was full with 15 people, ranging from a 1-year-old to recent retirees.

As Niranjana put it: "The whole family is here!"

We had a wonderful meal, a great visit from family and friends - and we even managed to saber three bottles of sparkling wine.

After everybody went home and we were left with a reasonably quiet house, Melissa declared this her best birthday ever.

It is never far from our minds how important our immediate and extended family is. And it's days like this that help us keep that fact in sharp focus.
