Reading on grade level?

Niranjana has been pulling books off our previously well-organized shelves and "giving" them to us as "presents." Thankfully, she doesn't expect us to read them to her now... maybe in a few years, or 10.

It sometimes is a bit of a shock to be handed one of these books by an innocent preschooler, especially if you were just talking about the Lion King and fruit snacks. Thankfully, they generally don't have pictures in them — which means the "mean guy Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast wouldn't like them (Belle is our favorite princess because she likes to read books and she uses her imagination when the books don't have pictures).

These are the selections we have stacked in the dining room, waiting to be returned to the shelf.

-- The Hunt for Red October (one of our favorites!)
-- Deep Black: The startling truth behind America's top-secret spy satellites
-- Nam: The Vietnam War in the words of the soldiers who fought there
-- Silent Coup: The removal of a President
-- The entire Alpine series of newspaper-based murder mysteries by Mary Daheim
-- Illusions of a Reluctant Messiah (book club)
-- Lonely Planet travel guide for Jordan and Syria (vacation 1997)
-- Rainbow Valley (part of the Anne of Green Gables series)

Now, if only we could get her to be more interested in HER books. That 20 minutes a day sure can be a challenge, even when it's broken into chunks. Fancy Nancy, here we come!

I agree!

It is a huge challenge and as an avid reader the 20 minutes was not one I was expecting would be hard.

Our issue seems to be mostly propelled by Leif's dawdling nature. We always used to say "three books before bed". Recently I have started adjusting the the book number based off of time. I hate to do that, but when we start bedtime at 9:05pm and that is the time he is normally sleeping by, it has to be done. And hopefully to help drive a point home when I say, "hurry up and finish your food for storytime".
