In the swing of things

This little child of ours loves going to the park, particularly a small one near our neighborhood we dubbed "Windy Park" because it often seems especially breezy there.

Our first visit was less than a week after arriving home from Chennai, after Niranjana's first visit to the dentist. I don't think she'd been on a slide before, so she wasn't too keen on the experience.

Her interest in the swing grew quickly, and after Melissa went back to work - but before I did - Niranjana and I would head to the park for 45 nonstop minutes on the swing.

One time in December, Niranjana insisted we go to the park to swing. Even as the snow started flying, she soldiered on. We've been at that park when it was below freezing.

After today, we've been there in 105 degree heat of summer. I picked Niranjana up after school today, and she was rather insistent that we go to Windy Park. We stopped at a convenience store for hydration, then headed to the park. Niranjana was perfectly content on the swing for a good 30 minutes, then play on the slides for another 45.

When we got back into the car, the thermostat said it was 122. That quickly dropped back to 104. That didn't make me feel any cooler.

Now, we're enjoying some lovely A/C.

First time on a slide?

That first trip to Windy Park, we wondered if our daughter had ever seen playground equipment before. Photos of the orphanage show a swing set on the dirt courtyard, but the staff told us the kids never went outside. I'll never forget our first day in the back yard, when I had to show Niranjana that grass was soft and OK to walk on.
