11 months

It was 11 months ago today that Niranjana arrived home with us. Is this possibly the same little girl? As I reflect on the past 11 months, I find it difficult to fathom that it's been that long - and that recent - since we were in India.

I especially recall those first few weeks home. Niranjana wanted nothing to do with me. It was all Mommy, all the time. Now that's easy to understand. Then, not so much.

I remember Melissa and I wondering how we were ever going to move forward because Niranjana would not let Mel go anywhere alone. Niranjana had to be with her every step of the way. When Melissa finally forced the issue and went to the mailbox alone, Niranjana was so frightened and unhappy.

Fast-forward to this past weekend, when Melissa went overnight to Wenatchee with Leadership Tri-Cities. Nary a tear or a word of concern from Niranjana. We talked about it, and I explained where Mommy was, and Niranjana and I had a great time together.

I marvel at how our little girl adapts to new situations. Children are so resilient, and Niranjana seems especially so. Perhaps it was from spending her first three-plus years in an orphanage, where the kids had to look out for themselves a little more.

As we count down to our first year together, I don't think any of us could be happier. Niranjana is filled with joy 95% of the time (with the other 5% coming just after she's awoken each day). Melissa loves being a mother and is happy to be in some semblance of a routine. And I have a little extra bounce in my step after my little girl says, "I love you, Daddy!"
