Mulan: Girl Power

We borrowed Mulan from friends who went on vacation. The first showing of this Disney animated movie — featuring a Chinese girl who rebels against society's expectations and goes to war in place of her disabled father — didn't generate a lot of interest from Niranjana.

We tried it again a few days ago and it was a big hit. Then we shared it with another mutual friend and the two preschoolers were transfixed. I've even caught Andy looking up from his laptop to watch it.

The soundtrack is pretty good, especially "I'll make a man out of you." I'm told by our friend that the martial arts moves that Mulan learns during that song are legitimate.

A little shopping research showed a Mulan and Mulan II box set. The best price turned out to be at Costco (at $22, it was $1 cheaper in the store than it was online). We're saving Mulan II for a future "prize," even though it looks suspiciously like there's a wedding at the end. The Disney recipe is to end with a kiss, after all.

Like Jasmine, there's not a lot of Mulan gear out there. She isn't even a Princess. But she's got girl power, and I'm glad to add Mulan to our list of mass media positive female role models.
