Andy picked up Niranjana from preschool Monday and took her to Kiwanis lunch, to see Santa at the mall, to pick out some Christmas gifts for moms and grandmothers, and to mutually select Niranjana's gift from Daddy at Toys R Us.
They spent about five hours together. Three bathroom trips. And apparently zero tantrums, arriving home safe, happy and tired.
I really hope this becomes an annual tradition. My father ("Grandpa") and I have this tradition, although it's been on hiatus since 2007 when Niranjana arrived. Also, instead of going to Portland to see my folks we stay home for Christmas now as Santa comes to our house (we believe in Santa and Jesus ... in different ways, but at the same time).
Dad and I have had some good shopping trips. The goal always is to go to downtown Portland, enjoy a nice lunch out someplace where they serve microbrew and french onion soup, buy Mom/Grandma's present and mutually agree on the present for me.
The results for Grandma have included more than one camera over the years, artwork (usually funky glass), and on one particularly good year she received pearls.
I usually end up with a clothing item from Nordstrom or Talbots, although last year's in-town Costco trip yielded a much-needed digital camera for me. I've received a watch, several coats (navy, red, lavender, and red), cowboy boots back in 1990 when line-dancing was in, and more recently a delicate-yet-affordable necklace from Tiffany's in the famous ice-blue box.
I wore that necklace to work on Monday, in honor of father-daughter traditions and priceless memories, which can't be wrapped and put under the tree.
