Chennai

Niranjana lives in Chennai, formerly known as Madras. Chennai is India's fourth-largest city at more than 7 million people.

Chennai is in southern India and is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a coastal city, directly north of Sri Lanka. Chennai and this stretch of India were affected by the 2004 tsunami, which killed more than 12,000 people in India. Niranjana was nearly a year old when the tsunami occurred, and it did not play a factor in her circumstances.

Chennai is known as a major center for the IT industry, including call centers. It's also well known as one of the major newspaper centers in the country. A burgeoning film industry (though not as famous as Bollywood) is in Chennai. And the city also is the center of the nation's automobile industry.

Thus, Chennai does not necessarily have the historical significance of Delhi in the north or Kolkata in the northeast, nor is it known for the nightlife of Goa or Mumbai. However, it has plenty of culture and interesting things to see.

Most importantly, it has Niranjana.
